Darmstadt-Dieburg Hospital //

therapeutic art installations

A commission to enhance the newly built Darmstadt-Dieburg Hospital in Groß-Umstadt, central Germany, Katy created a series of bespoke artworks. The goal: transform the hospital interiors into uplifting environments – offering an alternative to the muted tones of traditional healthcare interiors, while exploring the therapeutic benefits of art in hospitals.

Inspired by the hills and sweeping views of the Odenwald landscape, the wildflower designs evoke an atmosphere of tranquillity and a strong connection to nature. The artworks contribute to a healing atmosphere, and serve as visual markers – aiding the way-finding signage designed (by Studio KW) to guide people around the hospital’s expansive layout.

The commission encompassed unique artworks for four waiting areas and five hospital rooms, and two vinyl window installations spanning three floors of the hospital. Designed to exploit the intricate interplay between natural daylight and interior colour, the designs are transformed when the building is illuminated at night – forming a cohesive experience of an artwork that is visible both internally and externally. Katy also provided expertise in her role as colour consultant, influencing the cohesive palette seen throughout the way-finding system.
