STORIES ABOUT CITIES

The exhibition STORIES ABOUT CITIES brings together works that have emerged from Binks’ long-standing exploration of the city as a source of imagery. As she moves through urban spaces, she photographs buildings, windows, streets, signs and architectural fragments: fleeting views lasting only a few seconds. Her aim is not to portray specific cities or buildings. Rather, the photographs become impressions of places where perception, memory and movement overlap.
These photographs form the starting point for many of her works. Binks crops and enlarges her images, breaks them down into individual layers using halftone screens, and then translates them into screen prints. In the course of this process, the image increasingly diverges from its photographic source. Buildings, landscapes or momentary views remain partially recognizable whilst simultaneously dissolving into patterns, textures and areas of colour.
Like visual notes captured on Katy Binks’ walks through the city, STORIES ABOUT CITIES refers to places and moments without definitively defining them. Between photography and abstraction, precision and irregularity, fragments of urban experience emerge, leaving the viewer plenty of space for their own associations and inviting them to see the cities in a new light again and again.
